Conviction

Presented by Darebin Arts’ Speakeasy and The Zoey Louise Moonbeam

On the desperate shores of colonial Australia, two convict women disguise themselves as free settlers. They are hoping for another chance at life. But the arrival of a sinister redcoat sees their plans give way to terror, self-doubt and treachery. Will they survive the revolution brewing outside? Or are they just the hackneyed imaginings of a third-rate playwright imploding with self-hatred?

Continuing an investigation started with the award-winning Melbourne Fringe hit The Unspoken word is “Joe”, Conviction is a caustically funny examination of contemporary feminism and self-authorship. A play un–writing itself (and the authority of traditional drama) before our very eyes.

REVIEWS

“As genres smash into each other like some fringe theatre nightmare – made more real by the design by Romanie Harper (design) and Amelia Lever-Davidson (lighting) that reveals its own jokes and surprises – , we get closer to Dawson.”

-Sometimes Melbourne

“Every aspect of this production is superb… the design of stage, sound, lighting and digital projection come together in supporting and fleshing out the physical manifestation of Dawson’s chaotic interior landscape.”

-Arts Hub

“Dawson speaks to the bleaker aspects of our time with a fresh voice, Romanie Harper’s design is stylish and surprising and Declan Greene’s assured direction draws out strange, heightened performances that glitter with grotesquerie.”

-The Age

“Some clever staging from director Declan Greene, ingenious set design from Romanie Harper hand-in-glove with Amelia Lever-Davidson’s lighting.”

-Stage Whispers
